PLANETARY HEALER
1:: Oxygen the Planetary Healer
Much of what is happening in the Earth's upper atmosphere in regard to the depletion of ozone is also happening in our bodies. The scientist James Lovelock, who is the main proponent of the Gaia theory - that the Earth is actually a living conscious being, much like ourselves - points out that the composition, flow and exchange of gasses in the Earth's atmosphere, is directly parallel to the composition, flow and exchange of gasses involved in the metabolism of the human body. He points to this parallel ratio as an illustration of our total interconnectedness with our environment. As the Earth's atmosphere is daily suffering ever more depletion of ozone due to the unbearable amount of pollution it is forced to oxidize, is it any wonder that our bodies are struggling with the same issues?
Today, the "disease'' suffered by the Earth is an overwhelming breakdown of its "immune system'' to a highly toxic onslaught. The oceans, seas, lakes and streams, which are its circulatory system and depend on the rejuvenating effect of ozonated rain, are under great stress from a severely depleted ozone blanket. Under ideal conditions, ozone (O3) turns the moisture in the clouds (H2O) into hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), which then falls all over the planet aerating the various bodies of water. This enables the fish in the oceans to stay healthy. Also, as rivers and streams irrigate the planet's crops, the plants that are also supported grow healthier and more voluminous. Due to the faltering ozone layer and the resulting lack of H2O2, lakes are becoming overgrown with algae, and the seas are suffering a variety of types of lower life forms.
In much the same way, the human body has become more easily subject to cancer, chronic fatigue, and a vast number of degenerative diseases. In 1931 and, again, in 1944, Otto Warburg received the Nobel Prize in medicine for proving that the primary cause (all other causes are secondary) of cancer is lack of oxygen in the cells. Cancer is an anaerobic life form, an ancient life form, which predates the existence of oxygen on the planet. Thus, it only grows where toxic waste is so pervasive in the body that oxygen cannot circulate properly. Thus, when you oxygenate the cancer, you destroy its environment - and thus, albeit indirectly, the cancer.

The resulting O2 combined with O1 (O3 = ozone) is heavier than oxygen. So, it begins to settle toward the Earth due to the force of gravity. As it reaches the moisture in the clouds, some of the volatile singlet oxygen molecules combine with H2O. This turns into H2O2 or hydrogen peroxide, a key to life on this planet as well as in our bodies. As mentioned above, this H2O2 falls with the rain, and, if it is not destroyed by pollution, aerates the planet's lakes, rivers and streams, as well as the plants and trees.

As can be understood from the above discussion, the singlet O1 molecule in ozone is a key ingredient in hydrogen peroxide. Most people are familiar with hydrogen peroxide's ability to kill unwanted pathogens, of how it bubbles and foams when it comes in contact with bacteria. What is not so well known is how our bodies use it internally to both oxygenate healthy cells and oxidize unwanted waste. Indeed, part of the success of Gerson therapy (raw food diet) that I used on myself to eliminate several tumors, is not only the action of the raw live enzymes in the uncooked food, but also its high content of hydrogen peroxide, which is destroyed by cooking.
In actual fact, much like the Earth, our own bodies also create a certain amount of hydrogen peroxide because it is essential for a number of bodily processes. According to Charles Farr M.D., Ph.D., one of the foremost experts in bio-oxidative therapy and also a nominee for the 1993 Nobel Prize for Medicine:
"Hydrogen peroxide is manufactured by the body and is maintained at a constant level throughout our life. It is part of a system that helps the body regulate living cell membranes. It is a hormonal regulator, necessary for the body to produce several hormonal substances such as estrogen, progesterone and thyroxine. It is vital for the regulation of blood sugar and the production of energy in all body cells. Hydrogen peroxide helps regulate certain chemicals to operate the brain and nervous system. It has a stimulatory and regulatory effect on the immune system, and may either directly or indirectly kill viruses, bacteria, parasites, yeast, fungi, and a variety of other harmful organisms.''
Dr. Farr's studies, not to mention his treatments on thousands of patients, demonstrate the positive metabolic effect of intravenous infusions of hydrogen peroxide. Like ozone in the Earth's atmosphere that turns into hydrogen peroxide when mixed with rain, hydrogen peroxide in the physical body has the ability to oxidize almost any physiological and pathological substance. In the human body it has the added benefit of producing increased tissue and cellular oxygen tensions, keeping the cells healthy and less prone to penetration by germs and viruses. Ozone, once it combines with the fluids of the body, produces similar yet more powerful results than hydrogen peroxide. According to Dr. Alwa, hydrogen peroxide has a catalytic or "homeopathic'' effect in the body. Ozone is more direct in its effect.
However, Dr. Farr did not know as scientists now know, that the human body also has the capacity to produce ozone, which, as Dr. Alwa points out, has a stronger and quicker ability to eliminate pathogens. In their research at Scripps Institute, Paul Westworth and Richard Lerner determined that antibodies actually participate in the elimination of bacteria, and that ozone is formed during this process. To quote their research article published in Science Express on November 18, 2002: "In the last hundred years, immunologists have firmly held that the role of antibodies was solely to recognize pathogens and signal the immune system to make an immune response. The conventional wisdom was that the dirty work of killing the pathogens was to be left to other parts of the immune system. Now, Scripps has demonstrated that antibodies also have the ability to kill bacteria. This suggests that rather than simply recognizing foreign antigens and then activating other parts of the immune system to the site of infection, the antibodies may further enhance the immune response by directly killing the bacteria themselves. Antibodies appear to make ozone, which they detected through its chemical signature, which no other molecule has. Never before has ozone been detected in biology."
Thus, ozone has a distinct role to play in the destruction of pathogens, or disease-causing organisms. Another discovery in the same research was that antibodies also carry their reaction through an individual intermediate chemical species of di-hydrogen trioxide, a reduced form of ozone. Di-hydrogen trioxide has likewise never before been noticed in biological systems. Because of the above findings, one can no longer surmise that ozone is unhealthy in the human body. It is clearly as necessary a healing agent in humans, as it is for the planet at large. If we want to enjoy its benefits all we have to do is to follow certain protocols which mimic and enhance the body's own natural ability to heal itself.
As mentioned earlier, ozone, when used as a therapeutic agent, should never be directly inhaled. It can be introduced to the body in a variety of other ways: through muscular injection, rectal infusion, autohaemo-therapy (ozone mixed with the blood), or through the skin (combined ideally with a hot water spray and ozone piped into a small enclosed chamber or steam cabinet). To take it directly into our lungs with cell walls that are covered with today's pollutants and also by internal toxins ready to be expelled by the breath would only cause further irritation. Again, ozone causes oxidation, the literal burning up of pernicious agents in the body. While you can feel the body happily absorb ozone and its rejuvenating effects as it works within the sealed environment of tissues, veins and arteries, when mixed with the impure air we breathe, its oxidizing effect creates a natural coughing reaction, as the body begins to expel the unwanted agents.

Like all free radicals, the O1, which breaks down from O3, is quick to react with and oxidize other substances, making it an excellent medium for neutralizing viruses, bacteria, and fungi.
Ozone's half-life of about 20-30 minutes depends on the temperature and the pH value of the fluid media it is combined with. Although it is a natural trace element of the atmosphere, because of its short half-life, it cannot be bottled and stored.

The membrane of a clean cell (it is helpful if most of the cells are so) allows oxygen to diffuse freely into the cell. In the cell, oxygen, with the help of peroxisomes, combines with the water in the cell, forming hydrogen peroxide, H2O2. The numerous enzymatic reactions break down the H2O2 into water (H2O) and the single oxygen, O1 (a naturally occurring free radical). This O1 oxidizes (burns up or "cooks'') the nutrients in the cell, such as amino acids, fatty acids and glucose, enabling the cell to utilize them, thus synthesizing and producing substances necessary for various functions of the body.

In the same way, oxygen, which is absolutely needed to sustain life, can also be toxic if excessive amounts are introduced into the body, especially under hyperbaric conditions, in other words under pressure. With its additional O1, ozone when breathed irritates the respiratory mucus membrane because this lining of the lungs is filled with toxins inhaled from the air. The O1 in ozone oxidizes or burns up these pollutants and the resultant oxides cause irritation and a coughing reaction to expel them. If the air we breathed was pure oxygen, ozone would most likely not have this effect. Nonetheless, the effect of over-oxidation of toxins in the lungs due to excess O1 can damage the respiratory mucous membrane, which is why it is never taken directly into the lungs. Similarly if too large a quantity were introduced into the blood, ozone could damage the blood cells for the same reason (over-oxidation). Yet this would be difficult to achieve because it is easily avoided due to the tell-tale coughing sensation that arises when the body reaches its saturation point. Thus, if ozone is used cautiously, it can never be given in excess and can only improve the metabolism of the oxygen in the cell.

4:: O1 Neutralizes Many Toxins
Oxygen, when exposed to electricity or ultra violet radiation, breaks down to single O atoms. These then recombine with the remaining oxygen (O2) to form ozone (O3). Due to its high electron density, ozone in its gaseous state decomposes to atmospheric oxygen (and in a similar way when it is in a physical solution in water): in doing so, it passes through the intermediate stage of single oxygen atoms, during which its pronounced oxidative character comes into effect.
The structure of the ozone molecule with the positive side more stable and the configuration being angled, instead of being linear, makes ozone more electrophilic and also more reactive than passive O2.
It is this reaction that impressed the earlier researchers when they discovered that ozone was a good deodorizer and disinfectant. The aggressive oxidative or burning capability of ozone destroys bacteria completely. It also destroys the protein cover of a virus, which protects the inner nucleic acid, causing the breakdown of DNA and RNA of the virus. Thus the viruses are inactivated. This made ozone ideal to use around slaughterhouses and sewage disposal plants. Again, this bactericidal, fungicidal and virucidal effect was a successful treatment for open wounds and ulcers during World War I.
Ozone's strong oxidative effect is used in water purification.
